Decentralized Waste Management: Energy and Biogas Production

Society for Promotion of Wastelands Development (SPWD) and Society for Action in Community Health (SACH) have been jointly working for protection of River Ganga (Nirmal Jal-Aviral Ganga). One of the ongoing activities of the colaboration is Area Water Partnership (AWP) in Kanpur. It has also received support from India Water Partnership (IWP). In this context, the issues of alternate energy options–other than hydro-power, thermal power and nuclear power—has been raised all the time.

After independence many types of gobar (animal dung) based gas and energy units came into existence in India. This technology has had mixed results.  Today, more advanced technology is said to be successful in countries like Germany, USA, Brazil and Costa Rica. These technological options in India should be made available in decentralized manner and adapted to the local needs.
